Local services

Local services refer to services that are used often and that the majority of people need in the course of their life. In the context of the health and social services, local services are provided to help clients in their everyday life and these services are relatively easily accessible.

With the health and social services reform, the counties will be responsible for ensuring that reasonably easily accessible health and social services are provided to clients. Local services are significant especially for clients who need them often and over a long period of time, as well as for people for whom seeking services from further away is difficult.  The health and social services reform will bring the most often used services to local health and social services centres.

In sparsely populated areas, electronic and mobile services must also be used to secure availability. 

There will be a wider range of digital services and guidance available to support your wellbeing. For instance, you can book appointments or ask advice online. Remote consultation of a doctor or a social worker (telemedicine) is also possible, if necessary.

Family workers can visit you at home. If you are an older person, you can get services brought to your home, too.  In case of an emergency, you can get prehospital medical services at your home.

Mobile services, such as mobile dental or vaccination clinics, will come close to you. 

Centralised health and social services

Certain health and social services will be centralised regionally. They will be services that require a large population base and a large number of clients as well as specialised services. Likewise, rare and more expensive services and measures will be organised on a national or regional basis. This will safeguard that the services are of high quality and safe.

In healthcare services this means that medical examinations and treatments will be provided in university hospitals and other units with extensive services around the clock.  Specialised social services may also be brought under larger units. Also then, the services will be provided close to the clients.
